Summary About the Position: Serves as a Multi-language Department Chairperson for the Intermediate and Advanced (INT/ADV) Programs, in LREC-Professionalization Programs (LREC-PP) School, Continuing Education (CE) Directorate, Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). Responsibilities Supervising a multi-language team. Manages the target language instructional programs including evaluating, selecting, and sequencing language materials and ensuring their integration into a mission- responsive, effective, and efficient language curriculum. Works closely with MLI and the Director on course scheduling, and in coordination with CE Academic Support Team plans faculty training and utilization, and curriculum and assessment development. Collaboration with the counterparts across CE, works on standardization of instruction and curriculum of INT/ADV courses. Teaches 5 hours per week (if needed/applicable), mentors' teachers, and identifies student strengths and weaknesses as part of an on-going program of instructional and curriculum improvement. Guides language teams in adapting, supplementing, and updating instructional material and techniques as dictated by program objectives and students’ needs Develops faculty through classroom observations, mentoring, counseling; and engaging in hands-on training. Monitors daily classroom instruction to ensure high-quality instruction. Observes classes, conducts post-observation meetings, writes annual performance appraisals, oversees the faculty’s time and attendance, and other related administrative duties. The initial appointment is not to exceed (NTE) 36 months, and may be extended upon mission, funding, and management discretion. POSITION WILL BE FILLED AT ONE RANK: AD-1701-05 Associate Professor In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant work experience and education level (degree and year awarded); official transcripts/foreign transcript evaluation will be requested upon selection. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Must be able to speak, read and write in one additional language fluently. Preferred languages: Russian, Chinese, Korean, Persian-Farsi, Arabic, or Spanish. Must be able to speak, read and write in English fluently. Associate Professor: Ph.D. or master's degree in Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Education, Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESOL/TEFL), Linguistics, Language (English included), Literature, Education, Educational Psychology, Educational Technology, Translation & Interpretation, Cross-Cultural Studies, or Educational Administration. (NOTE: Please attach a copy of your transcripts for verification). AND: At least four years of relevant professional expertise or experience and demonstrate significant contributions to a program or the field in two or more of the seven following core areas: teaching, curriculum, development, faculty development, testing, program management, research and evaluation, academic program support. If selected, applicant must pass a language proficiency test (OPI). LANGUAGE EVALUATION: The minimum English proficiency is a Level 2 in speaking. The minimum proficiency for one additional language to be taught is a Level 3 in speaking. The proficiency levels are defined by the Inter-agency Language Round table (ILR) level descriptions and can be viewed at http://www.govtilr.org. Failure of any portion of the language tests will disqualify applicants for a period of 6 months. Applicants may re-apply against an open vacancy announcement after 6 months if they wish to be considered again. If selected again, retesting is allowed only once. You must submit a 300-word HANDWRITTEN essay in one additional language. Preferred Languages: Russian, Chinese, Korean, Persian-Farsi, Arabic, or Spanish. You must also include a 300-word HANDWRITTEN English translation of the essay. Essay topic is how your background, education and training has prepared you for the language curriculum specialist position. NOTE: Typed essays are NOT acceptable. The essay is not used to evaluate work experience, only for the purpose of evaluating the language writing proficiency. Please provide, at a minimum, three professional references with your application packet. Please note: Letters of recommendation will not be forwarded to management, you must provide three professional references; to include name, title, email address and/or phone number.
