Job Description
The Teaching and Learning Center is seeking one (1) Instructional Designer or one (1) Instructional Designer Intermediate.
The Teaching and Learning Center Instructional Design (ID) Team will partner with faculty and other subject matter experts to design, plan, and deliver technology-enhanced assignments, learning resources, and courses to promote student engagement and retention in alignment with the mission of the University. IDs are responsible for the routine creation and support of learning experiences and materials. The work of the ID draws upon expertise, creativity, and experience to assess needs, design processes, develop materials, and evaluate their effectiveness. The Teaching and Learning Center is home to the Faculty Professional Development Program, First Year Together, the Indigenous Peoples Curriculum Initiative, and the Instructional Design team.
Instructional Designer
Consultation - 50%
• Assist faculty and/or subject matter experts in defining appropriate learning objectives and developing high quality, measurable learning outcomes, assessments, course activities, and tool selection.
• Consult with faculty and other subject matter experts to guide their own creation or revision of courses, with particular attention to the Learning Management System.
• Consult with faculty and other subject matter experts around questions of pedagogy, assignment design, rubric development, or the Learning Management System.
• Assist with alignment of course level student learning outcomes, assessments and learning activities.
Provide Training & Professional Learning - 20%
• Serve the professional learning needs of NAU faculty in terms of course design, course redesign, evaluation, revision, and Canvas implementation for both in-person and online courses.
• Develop and deliver professional learning for faculty designed to “enhance teaching excellence and foster learning environments that support the success of all students.” (NAU 2025 - Elevating Excellence, p. 3).
• Design and deliver professional learning around the Learning Management System (Canvas)
• Introduce and reinforce evidence-based teaching/learning methodologies that utilize appropriate education technologies to promote high impact learning.
• Model appropriate use of the three types of engagement in learning environments (student to content, student to instructor, student to student).
Teaching and Learning Center Service - 15%
• Contribute to the day-to-day functions of the Teaching and Learning Center.
• Serve as a representative of the Teaching and Learning Center on internal and/or external committees, task forces, and working groups, as assigned.
• Support the work of the Teaching and Learning Center around its outreach, networking, and relationship-building efforts with various stakeholders.
• Collaborate with institutional colleagues in ITS and other areas to provide informed referrals and cohesive care of clients.
Research and Engagement in Professional Learning - 10%
• Keep up with institutional policies related to the work of the ID.
• Keep up with current trends in the literature and educational technology for teaching and learning in higher education.
• Keep up with laws and policies around teaching and learning in higher education (e.g., FERPA, ADA).
Other - 5%
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• When developing faculty learning experiences, select appropriate strategies such as individual training, group instruction, self-study, lectures, demonstrations, simulation exercises, role-play, and computer -based training to solidify the comprehension of materials.
• Provide instruction on and use of communication strategies to foster a learning community that supports student success and persistence.
Teaching and Learning Center Service - 15%
• Contribute to the day-to-day functions of the Teaching and Learning Center.

Work Environment
• This work is done in an open office in Cline Library on the Flagstaff Mountain Campus. Meetings and appointments with faculty or other clients may be scheduled in other buildings on campus.
Minimum Qualifications
Instructional Designer
• High school diploma
• 1 - 2 years of relevant experience*
Instructional Designer, Intermediate
• Undergraduate bachelor's degree
• 2 - 4 years of relevant experience*
*(Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.)

Salary
Instructional Designer
Salary range begins at $44,422. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
Instructional Designer, Intermediate
Salary range begins at $51,085. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
Instructional Designer
This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
Instructional Designer, Intermediate
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
